Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007192

A linear gear with teeth cut along a straight edge, designed to mesh with a rotating pinion gear to convert rotational motion into linear motion, or vice versa. The rack and pinion system is commonly used in steering mechanisms of vehicles and in machine tools for precise positioning. The pitch of the rack teeth must match the pitch of the pinion gear for proper engagement.
