Rack railway

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007193

A railway in which a toothed rack rail laid between the running rails is engaged by a cogwheel on the locomotive or railcar. The engagement gives positive traction that does not depend on wheel-to-rail adhesion, so trains can climb gradients far steeper than conventional railways manage. The Pilatus Railway in Switzerland reaches a maximum gradient of 48 percent, the steepest of any rack railway.
