Snail
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007250
A spiral-shaped cam, or a flat plate with a spirally curved outline, that gives motion to or sets the position of another part as it turns. A follower riding the rising spiral moves steadily outward and then drops back at the step. In striking clocks, the snail positions the rack tail so the correct number of hours is sounded.
