Foxtail
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002429
A thin metal wedge inserted into a split at the end of a bolt, pin, or tenon before it is driven into a hole. As the pin is hammered into place, the wedge makes contact with the bottom of the hole, forcing it into the split and flaring the pin's end. This action creates a very secure, permanent fastening that resists vibration and withdrawal, a technique known as foxtail wedging.
