Knobble
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003201
To work a mass of refined iron from a finery forge into a consolidated lump, or knob, suitable for hammering into a bar. This historical process was a key step in producing wrought iron from pig iron, involving reheating and hammering a bloom to expel slag and weld the iron particles together. The resulting knobby lump was then taken to a shingling hammer or early rolling mill for further processing into a more uniform shape.
