Knock
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003202
An audible pinging or rattling sound from an internal combustion engine caused by detonation, which is the uncontrolled, premature ignition of the air-fuel mixture in a cylinder. This secondary flame front collides with the one initiated by the spark plug, creating a sharp pressure wave. Modern engines use knock sensors to detect this vibration and signal the engine control unit to retard ignition timing.
