Ignition

The process of initiating combustion in an internal combustion engine, typically by a spark plug in gasoline engines or by compression in diesel engines. This event occurs at a precise moment in the engine cycle to maximize power output and fuel efficiency. The timing of this process is controlled by the engine's electronic control unit.
