Preignition

The uncontrolled ignition of the air-fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine cylinder before the spark plug fires. This phenomenon can be caused by hot spots in the combustion chamber, such as glowing carbon deposits or overheated spark plug electrodes. Preignition can lead to engine damage, reduced performance, and an audible knocking sound.
