Advanced time
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000105
The setting of an ignition system in an internal combustion engine so that the spark plug fires earlier in the compression stroke, before the piston reaches top dead center. Advancing the timing gives the fuel-air mixture more time to burn completely, which can increase engine power and efficiency at higher RPMs. The optimal ignition timing advance is measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation before top dead center and varies with engine speed and load.
