Ignition timing
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002968
The precise moment, relative to piston position and engine speed, at which a spark plug fires to ignite the air-fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine's cylinder. Correct timing maximizes power output and fuel efficiency by initiating combustion when it can apply the most effective downward force on the piston during the power stroke. Timing is measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation before top dead center (BTDC).
