Pig iron

An intermediate product of iron smelting, produced in a blast furnace, containing a high carbon content (typically 3.5-4.5%) and other impurities. It is cast into crude ingots called 'pigs' for subsequent processing. Pig iron is brittle and not directly usable, serving as the primary raw material for steelmaking and cast iron production.
