Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004566
A historical process for converting pig iron into wrought iron by decarburization in a reverberatory furnace. Molten pig iron was stirred by a 'puddler' to expose it to air, oxidizing carbon and other impurities. This process produced a pasty mass of wrought iron, which was then hammered to remove slag.
