Loup

An irregular, spongy mass of iron produced directly from iron ore in a bloomery furnace. This product contains entrapped slag and unreduced iron oxide, requiring further processing to become usable metal. Loups were the primary form of iron produced before the development of blast furnaces, which yield molten pig iron.
