Basic process

A steelmaking method that uses a basic refractory lining in the furnace and basic fluxes to remove impurities from molten iron. This process is effective at removing phosphorus and sulfur, which are detrimental to steel quality. The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) is a prominent example, where oxygen is blown through molten pig iron to oxidize impurities.
