Lancet
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003240
A steel pipe or tube used to inject a stream of high-velocity oxygen into a furnace or to open a taphole, also known as an oxygen lance. In steelmaking, it is used in a basic oxygen furnace to refine molten iron by oxidizing impurities like carbon, or in an electric arc furnace to cut scrap and decarburize the bath. A thermic lance, a type of lancet packed with steel wires, burns at extreme temperatures to cut through thick metal or refractory.
