Reduce
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004735
To remove oxygen or other non-metallic elements from a metal compound, such as an ore, to produce the elemental metal. This chemical process involves a gain of electrons by the metal ions, lowering their oxidation state to zero. In a blast furnace, for instance, iron oxides are reduced by carbon monoxide gas to produce molten iron, a reaction that occurs at temperatures above 900°C.
