Reductive

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004739

Describing a chemical process or environment that causes reduction, the addition of electrons to a substance. A reductive atmosphere, rich in agents like carbon monoxide or hydrogen and poor in oxygen, is maintained in furnaces to prevent the oxidation of metals during heating, smelting, or annealing. This contrasts with an oxidizing atmosphere, which contains excess oxygen and would form scale or oxides on the metal surface.
