An abbreviation for controlled atmosphere, a technology used to regulate the gaseous composition within a sealed space, such as a ship's hold or a storage container. By lowering oxygen levels and increasing carbon dioxide and nitrogen, a controlled atmosphere slows the respiration and ripening of perishable goods like fruits and vegetables, extending their storage life during long voyages. For transporting apples, a typical CA environment maintains oxygen at 1 to 2 percent and carbon dioxide at 2 to 5 percent.
