Airbreathing

Describing an engine or propulsion system that draws oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere for combustion. This type of engine, such as a jet engine or piston engine, is suitable for operation within Earth's atmosphere. Rocket engines, in contrast, carry their own oxidizer and are not airbreathing.
