A control surface on an aircraft designed to increase drag and reduce airspeed, allowing for a steeper descent or shorter landing distance. These devices are deployed by the pilot, disrupting the smooth airflow over the wing or fuselage. They are distinct from spoilers, which primarily reduce lift.
