Spoil

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005544

To disrupt the smooth flow of air over an aerodynamic surface, thereby decreasing lift and increasing drag. This is accomplished using devices called spoilers, which are hinged panels on the upper surface of a wing that can be raised into the airstream. Spoilers are deployed symmetrically to act as air brakes for descent and landing, or asymmetrically in conjunction with ailerons for roll control, a function known as spoilerons.
