Hypergolic
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002948
Describing a rocket propellant combination where the fuel and oxidizer components ignite spontaneously upon contact with each other, without needing an external ignition system. This property provides high reliability for engine starts and restarts in the vacuum of space. Common hypergolic combinations include unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) as the fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) as the oxidizer, used in many spacecraft propulsion systems.
