Damp

Any hazardous or asphyxiating gas found in a mine, other than normal atmospheric air. The term is a general one, specified by a prefix, such as firedamp for methane, blackdamp for air with depleted oxygen, or whitedamp for carbon monoxide. Gas concentrations are monitored continuously, with methane becoming explosive in air at concentrations between 5 and 15 percent.
