Airway
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000149
A passage, tunnel, or shaft in an underground mine specifically designated for the movement of air as part of the ventilation system. Airways are divided into intakes, which carry fresh air to the working faces, and returns, which exhaust contaminated air from the mine. The size and condition of these passages directly affect the efficiency of air circulation and the dilution of harmful gases like methane and carbon monoxide.
