Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001815

A mine shaft or other opening to the surface through which fresh air is drawn into the underground workings of a mine. It serves as the primary intake for the mine's ventilation system, supplying breathable air for personnel and diluting gases and dust. This intake shaft is paired with an upcast shaft, which exhausts the used, contaminated air back to the atmosphere to complete the ventilation circuit.
