Lum

A chimney or flue in a mine ventilation system, designed to draw air out of the underground workings. This vertical shaft creates a natural draft, expelling stale air and gases to the surface. Lums are an integral part of passive ventilation, working in conjunction with intake shafts to circulate fresh air throughout the mine.
