Undercast

A passage or tunnel constructed beneath another roadway or airway in a mine, primarily to direct airflow for ventilation purposes. Undercasts allow fresh air to be routed to working faces while contaminated air is directed to return airways, preventing mixing. They are a common feature in complex underground ventilation networks.
