The airway or passage through which used air, or return air, flows out of the mine workings after ventilating the active faces. This air has a lower oxygen content and contains contaminants such as dust, gases, and heat from equipment and blasting. A mine's ventilation system is designed with separate intake and return airways to prevent the recirculation of contaminated air.
