Damp course

A continuous horizontal barrier of waterproof material built into the lower part of a masonry wall to prevent moisture from rising through capillary action. This layer, known as a damp-proof course (DPC), isolates the structure above from ground moisture that can cause decay, salt efflorescence, and thermal bridging. Materials for a DPC include specialized plastic sheeting, bitumen-coated felt, slate, or a layer of water-resistant mortar.
