A single, continuous horizontal row of material units, such as bricks in masonry or stitches in a knitted fabric. In the manufacturing of composites, a course is one row of reinforcing tape or tow laid down by an automated fiber placement machine. The orientation and placement of each course are specified in the design layup schedule, which dictates the mechanical properties of the final part.
