Afterdamp

A toxic mixture of gases remaining in a mine after an explosion, particularly one involving methane or coal dust. It consists mainly of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor, with insufficient oxygen to sustain life. Exposure to afterdamp can cause asphyxiation or poisoning, making it extremely hazardous for rescue workers.
