Taphole

An opening in the bottom or side of a metallurgical furnace, such as a blast furnace or electric arc furnace, through which molten metal or slag is discharged. It is typically sealed with a refractory plug or clay gun during operation and opened by drilling or lancing when the furnace is ready to be tapped. The diameter of a taphole can range from 50 to 200 millimeters depending on the furnace size and material being tapped.
