Almond furnace

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000171

A furnace used in silver refining in which the litharge (lead oxide) left over from cupellation is reduced back to metallic lead by heating it with charcoal. The recovered lead can be used again to collect silver from further ore. It differs from a cupellation furnace, which oxidizes lead to separate the silver, by working in the opposite direction, turning lead oxide into metal.
