Reverberate

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004827

To heat a charge by throwing heat down onto it from the low arched roof and walls of a furnace, while the flame and hot gases pass over the material from a separate firebox. The charge never touches the solid fuel, which keeps ash and fuel impurities out of the metal, although the combustion gases do reach it. Reverberatory furnaces are used for melting copper, tin and other non-ferrous metals and for puddling iron.
