Underdraught

A current of air supplied from below the fuel bed in a furnace, forge, or boiler. This forced or natural flow of air through the grate provides the oxygen necessary for efficient combustion of solid fuels like coal or coke. The rate of the underdraught is controlled by dampers or fans to regulate the temperature and heat output of the combustion process.
