Stall

A working place at a coal face, especially a narrow one driven in the pillar-and-stall system, where a collier cuts and loads the coal. Stalls are driven between pillars of unworked coal that are left to support the roof. In longwall workings the part of the face assigned to one collier is also called a stall.
