Shortwall
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005237
A method of underground coal mining that uses a continuous miner to extract coal from relatively short panels. Unlike longwall mining, which uses a shearer across a long face, shortwall panels are typically 45 to 90 meters (150 to 300 feet) wide. Roof support is provided by self-advancing hydraulic jacks, similar to longwall systems but on a smaller scale.
