A miner who works at the side of a coal face, cutting into the coal seam at a right angle to the main face. This task, known as working the 'buttock', involves breaking down the coal to widen the working area for the main colliers or for the installation of roof supports. The buttocker's work prepares the next section of the face for extraction, creating a new line for the advance of the mining operation.
