Spurn

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007268

A small pillar or buttress of coal or rock left in place to provide localized support or to protect a corner or entryway in an underground mine. Spurns are intentionally created during excavation to reinforce the main pillars, prevent spalling at intersections, or guide the flow of ventilating air. Unlike larger, systematically placed pillars that form the primary roof support system, a spurn is a smaller, often temporary or auxiliary feature designed to address a specific structural or operational need in its immediate vicinity.
