Ramble
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004688
A bed of soft shale lying directly above a coal seam, forming the immediate roof of the workings. It is weak and breaks up readily, so it tends to come down as the coal beneath it is removed and often needs support or has to be taken down. The word names the roof bed itself, not the debris that falls from it.
