Swad
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005794
A thin layer of soft, poor-quality coal, clay, or shale found at the bottom of a coal seam. This material is too impure to be commercially valuable and is separated from the main body of coal during extraction. A swad is considered waste and is often left in the mine as backfill or discarded on spoil heaps, as its high ash content makes it unsuitable for fuel.
