Wayboard
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006549
A thin layer or parting of clay or soft shale found between thicker beds of rock, especially separating a coal seam from the overlying or underlying strata. These layers represent minor interruptions in the depositional environment and can create planes of weakness within the rock mass. The presence of a wayboard can affect roof stability and mining conditions, sometimes requiring specific support methods to prevent falls.
