The overhead rock surface or strata forming the upper boundary of an underground mine excavation, such as a tunnel, drift, or stope. Maintaining the stability of the roof is a primary concern in ground control to prevent rockfalls and collapses. Depending on the rock quality, the roof is supported with methods like rock bolts, timber sets, steel arches, or sprayed concrete.
