Roofstone

A layer of rock or other material forming the immediate roof of a mine working, particularly in coal or other stratified deposits. This stratum must possess sufficient strength and stability to prevent collapse into the excavated area, providing overhead protection for miners and equipment. Geotechnical analysis assesses the integrity of the roofstone to determine appropriate support systems, such as roof bolts or timber props.
