Cockermeg

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001212

A wooden prop or strut used for temporary roof support in a coal mine, particularly in older British mining practices. It was set diagonally between the floor and the roof or between other timbers to provide immediate stability after blasting or cutting, allowing miners to work safely underneath. The cockermeg was part of a system of timbering that has been largely replaced by modern hydraulic props and steel arches, which offer greater load-bearing capacity.
