Nether

Relating to a lower or underlying position within a mine working or geological formation. The term is often used in historical or regional contexts to distinguish between upper and lower components, such as the nether roof, which is the immediate rock layer directly above a coal seam. In coal mining, the stability of the nether roof is a primary factor in determining the method of roof support required.
