Bar down
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000421
To inspect and remove loose or unstable rock from the roof (back) and walls (ribs) of an underground excavation using a long scaling bar. This safety procedure is performed after blasting and before any other work begins in a newly advanced area to prevent rockfalls. The scaler taps the rock with the bar, listening for a hollow sound that indicates a detached slab, which is then pried loose.
