Built-up roof

A continuous, semi-flexible roof membrane fabricated on-site from multiple plies of roofing felt laminated together with bitumen. The bitumen, either asphalt or coal tar pitch, acts as both the adhesive and the waterproofing agent between the felt layers. A final surface of gravel, slag, or a mineral-coated cap sheet is applied to the top layer of hot bitumen to protect it from solar radiation.
