Interlayment

A layer of felt, membrane, or metal sheet laid between the courses of steep-slope roofing, especially wood shakes, to resist wind-driven rain and snow that gets under the exposed roof covering. The strips are woven in between courses so that each one covers the top of the course below. Felt interlayment for shakes is typically 18 inches (460 mm) wide.
