Sloam
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005372
A layer of soft, clayey, or muddy material found between beds of coal or adjacent to a coal seam. This unconsolidated stratum can be difficult to manage during excavation, as it is prone to sloughing and instability when exposed to air or water. The thickness of a sloam layer varies from a few inches to several feet and its presence affects the choice of mining method and roof support.
